Test AJ: Seat Belt Indicator Circuit Malfunction

  1. After reviewing seat belts description and operation, go to next step. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. While buckling and unbuckling seat belt, monitor fasten safety belt indicator on instrument panel cluster. If fasten safety belt indicator does not operate as commanded, go to next step. If fasten safety belt indicator operates as commanded, concern may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittent problems, see PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS  under INTERMITTENTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe DRIVER SIDE BELT STATUS parameter from SIR data list. If scan tool parameter displays buckled, go to next step. If scan tool parameter does not display buckled, go to step  7.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) 32-pin harness connector. SDM is located under passenger's seat. Disconnect left front seat belt switch harness connector. Left front seat belt switch is part of seat belt buckle. Check for open or high resistance in left front seat belt switch signal circuit, Black/White wire between left front seat belt switch terminal "A" and SDM harness connector terminal A15. See Figure. If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  10.
  5. Check for open or high resistance in left front seat belt switch ground circuit, Black wire between ground and left front seat belt switch harness connector terminal "B". Ground point is located on left "B" pillar, under seat belt anchor. If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  10.
  6. Check for open in left front seat belt switch. If problem exists, replace left front seat belt switch. After repairs are made go to step  10. If no problem exists, go to step  9.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) 32-pin harness connector. SDM is located under passenger's seat. Disconnect left front seat belt switch harness connector. Left front seat belt switch is part of seat belt buckle. Check for short to voltage or short to ground in left front seat belt switch signal circuit, Black/White wire between left front seat belt switch terminal "A" and SDM harness connector terminal A15. See Figure. If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  10.
  8. Check for short in left front seat belt switch. If problem exists, replace left front seat belt switch. After repairs are made go to step  10.
  9. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  10. Check system for normal operation. If system operates normally, test is complete. If system does not operate normally, go to step  3.
