Test J: Noise In Steering Column

After reviewing ignition lock system description perform PRELIMINARY INSPECTION under TROUBLE SHOOTING. After performing preliminary inspection, go to next step.
Verify that noise is present in steering column during operation. If noise is present in steering column during operation, go to next step. If noise is not present in steering column during operation, system is okay.
Check for looseness in steering column components. If no steering column components are loose, go to next step. If steering column components are loose, go to step 8 .
Inspect Supplemental Inflatable Restraint/Supplemental Restraint System SIR/SRS coil for looseness. If SIR/SRS coil is not noisy, go to next step. If SIR/SRS coil noisy, go to step 9 .
Check horn contact ring for lubrication. If horn contact ring does not need to be lubricated, go to next step. If horn contact ring needs to be lubricated, go to step 10 .
Inspect intermediate shaft bearing for damage, lubrication, wear or proper seating. If bearings are in need of repair or replacement, go to step 13 . If bearings are not in need of repair or replacement, go to step 8 .
Check steering column coupling for looseness. If steering column coupling is loose, go to step 12 . If steering column is not loose, go to step 3 .
Tighten the steering column components to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . After repairs are made, go to step 13 .
Replace SIR/SRS coil. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. After repairs are made, go to step 13 .
Lubricate horn contact ring. After repairs are made, go to step 13 .
Replace intermediate shaft as necessary. See appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING. After repairs are made, go to step 13 .
Tighten steering column coupling to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . After repairs are made, go to next step.
Operate steering to verify repairs. If steering noise is gone, testing is complete. If steering noise is still evident, go to step 3 .
