DTC P1189: Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Switch Circuit: Testing

NOTE: Do not turn ignition key to crank position or engage starter at any time during testing.
  1. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter in PCM EVAP data list. If parameter displays OK, go to next step. If parameter does not display OK, concern may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittent problems, see PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS  under INTERMITTENTS.
  3. Disconnect engine oil pressure switch harness connector. Engine oil pressure switch is located at left lower side of engine block. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and engine oil pressure switch signal circuit (Tan/Black wire). Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter in PCM EVAP data list. If parameter does not display low, go to next step. If parameter displays low, go to step  6.
  4. Check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in engine oil pressure signal circuit, Tan/Black wire between engine oil pressure switch and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C2 terminal No. 19. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . See Figure. If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  9.
  5. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in PCM harness connectors. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  9. If no problem exists, go to step  8.
  6. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminal in engine oil pressure switch harness connector. If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  9.
  7. Replace oil pressure switch. After repairs are made, go to step  9.
  8. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - AZTEK article. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  9. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle through code enable criteria. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC does not reset system is okay. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
