DTC B2961: Key in Ignition Circuit Malfunction: Testing

  1. If audible warnings diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If audible warnings diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to AUDIBLE WARNINGS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe KEY IN IGNITION parameter in Body Control Module (BCM) data list. If parameter does not display active, go to next step. If parameter displays active, concern may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittent problems, see PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS  under INTERMITTENTS.
    3. NOTE: Body Control Module (BCM) harness connector C3 is located on end of BCM. For connector access BCM must be removed from center console fuse block.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect BCM harness connector C3. BCM is located in center console fuse block. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe key in ignition input circuit (Light Green wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  7.
  4. Check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in key in ignition input circuit (Light Green wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  10.
  5. Check for open, high resistance in ground circuit of key in ignition switch (Black wire). Ground point is located under left side of instrument panel on cross beam between parking brake assembly and steering column. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  10.
  6. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in ignition switch harness connector. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  10. If no problem exists, go to step  8.
  7. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in BCM harness connector. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  10. If no problem exists, go to step  9.
  8. Replace ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - AZTEK article. After repairs are made, go to step  10.
  9. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - AZTEK article. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  10. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle through code enable criteria. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC does not reset system is okay. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
