VOLTS Light On At All Times With No Loss Of Serial Data

  1. Start engine. Connect Tech 2 scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Enter SDL monitor mode. Monitor communications from PCM to IPC. If VOLTS light is commanded on, PCM is receiving a low voltage signal. Check circuits to and from generator. If VOLTS light is not commanded on, go to next step.
  2. Using Tech 2, check if F-TERMINAL VOLTS reads greater than 5. If volts are not greater than 5 counts, check PCM field input of PCM-controlled generator. See appropriate CHARGING SYSTEM or TESTS W/CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Refer to menu below.
  3. If volts are greater than 5 counts and engine speed is less than 3000 RPM, replace IPC. If volts are greater than 5 counts and engine speed is greater than 3000 RPM, diagnose high RPM signal.
