Fuel Gauge Accuracy Test

  1. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit wiring connector. Connect one Red lead of Gauge Tester (J-33431) to sending unit Purple wire. Connect remaining Red lead to ground.
  2. Set tester to zero ohms. Turn ignition on. If fuel gauge indicates empty, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, check Purple wire and connections to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and fuel tank sending unit. If circuit is okay, replace IPC.
  3. Set resistance to 90 ohms for one minute or until gauge reads full. Slowly reduce resistance to zero ohms in a span of one minute. If gauge values equal resistance values in FUEL GAUGE SENDER RESISTANCE  , go to next step. If gauge values do not equal resistance values, check Purple wire and connections to IPC and fuel tank sending unit.

    88 ohms FULL
    60 ohms 3/4
    43 ohms 1/2
    26 ohms 1/4
    1.0 ohm EMPTY
  4. If resistances are to specification, check for open circuit in Black ground wire at fuel gauge sender, fuel tank unit wires for damage, float clearance, and loose connections. If all components are okay, replace fuel gauge sender. If resistances are not to specification, check Purple wire.
