Gauge Inoperative Or Inaccurate

  1. Disconnect fuel gauge sender connector. Connect one Red lead of Gauge Tester (J-33431) to fuel gauge sender connector terminal "C" (Purple wire). Connect other lead to ground. Set resistance dials on tester to zero ohms (Empty). Turn ignition on.
  2. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, check for poor connections at instrument cluster and splice connections. Also check for open or short to battery voltage in Purple wire. If connections and Purple wire are okay, replace instrument cluster.
  3. If fuel gauge indicates empty, set resistance dials on tester to 90 ohms (Full). If fuel gauge does not indicate full, check for poor connections at instrument cluster and splice connections. Also check for short to ground in Purple wire. If connections and Purple wire are okay, replace instrument cluster.
  4. If fuel gauge indicates full, check fuel gauge and ensure gauge values change with resistance as specified. See FUEL GAUGE SENDER RESISTANCE  table. If values do not change as specified, check for poor connection at instrument cluster. If connection is okay, replace instrument cluster.
  5. If values do change as specified, check for poor ground at fuel gauge sender. If fuel gauge sender ground is okay, check for mechanical clearance between float and tank interior. Repair loose, corroded or shorted wires and connections as necessary. If wires and connections are okay, replace fuel gauge sender.
