Removal ("F" Body)

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Disconnect pressure and return lines from rack and pinion assembly, and plug all openings. Remove cotter pins and castle nuts from outer tie rod ends. Separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles using Steering Linkage Puller (J-24319-01).
    CAUTION: Failure to disconnect steering shaft coupling from rack and pinion assembly shaft may damage these components, possibly resulting in loss of steering control after installation. DO NOT  start engine with hoses removed, as severe pump damage will result.
  2. Remove clamps and cover boot from steering shaft lower coupling. Remove steering shaft lower coupling pinch bolt. Disconnect steering shaft lower coupling from rack and pinion stub shaft. Remove 2 bolts retaining rack to front of crossmember. Remove rack.
