Cylinder Head: Installation

  1. Clean threads in the block using a 7/16-14 tap. Clean bolt threads using a wire brush. Install head gasket with arrow pointing to front of engine.
    NOTE: Head gaskets are not interchangeable. Failure to install with arrow pointing to front will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure.
  2. Apply sealant GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to underside of the bolt heads. Apply thread locker GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent to bolt threads. Install cylinder head and cylinder head bolts.
  3. Tighten cylinder head bolts to 47 N.m (35 lb.ft.) in the sequence shown in Fig. Fig 1 . Rotate each bolt 130 degrees in sequence using J 36660. Rotate the center four bolts an additional 30 degrees in sequence using J 36660.

  4. Install pushrods, guide plate and rocker arm assemblies: Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to rocker arm pedestal bolts before assembly. Tighten rocker arm pedestal bolts to 25 N.m + 70 degrees (19 lb.ft + 70 degrees).
  5. Install intake manifold, rocker arm cover, exhaust manifold. Install and tighten A/C compressor bracket bolt to 70 N.m (52 lb.ft.). Install generator support bracket to cylinder head. Install generator.
  6. Install electronic ignition and spark plug wires. Install belt tensioner assembly, power steering pump, and fuel pipe heat shield.
