Rear Axle Assembly: Installation

  1. Install control arm brackets to control arms, and tighten nuts to specification. See Fig 1 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  2. Place axle assembly on transmission jack and raise into position. Thoroughly clean control arm bracket-to-underbody bolts. Apply Loctite(R) sealer (part number 1052624 or equivalent) to threads.
  3. Install control arms to underbody, and tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Install backing plate, and hub and bearing assembly to rear axle. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Install brakeline connections to frame.
  6. Install brake cable to rear axle assembly.
  7. Position coil springs and insulators in seats, and raise rear axle. Leg of upper coil on springs must be parallel to axle assembly and face outboard within the limits shown in illustration. See Figure .
  8. Install shock absorbers to rear axle. Tighten nuts to specification. Install track bar to rear axle. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Install brakeline brackets to control arm brackets. Tighten screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  10. Connect parking brake cable to guide hook, and adjust as necessary. See appropriate article in BRAKES.
  11. Install brake drums and wheels. Tighten lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Remove transmission support, and lower vehicle.
  13. Bleed brake system and refill reservoir. See appropriate article in BRAKES.
