Tachometer Is Inoperative Or Inaccurate (3.8L Using Instrument Panel Tester)

  1. Disconnect 8-cavity connector in engine harness near point where fuel injector harness breaks away from main engine harness. This connector leads to Computer Controlled Coil Ignition (CCCI) module. Connect one lead of Instrument Panel Tester to White wire terminal of 8-cavity connector, and other lead to ground.
  2. Set tester to 60 Hz (54 MPH). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If tachometer does not indicate about 1190 RPM, go to next step. If tachometer indicates about 1190 RPM, check for open in White wire between 8-cavity connector and CCCI module. If White wire is okay, replace CCCI module.
  3. Check for open or short to ground in White wire between instrument cluster and CCCI module. If White wire is okay, replace instrument cluster.
