Rear Axle: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Install support stand at front of vehicle. Place supports under control arms. Remove wheels and brake drums. Remove stabilizer bar or track bar (if equipped). See STABILIZER BAR  or TRACK BAR  in this article.
  2. Disconnect parking brake cable. Remove brake lines from brackets on axle assembly. Remove shock absorber mountings from rear axle. Disconnect wheel speed sensor lead (if equipped).
  3. On all models, remove coil springs and insulators. See COIL SPRINGS & INSULATORS  in this article. While supporting rear axle, remove control arm-to-body mounting bolts. Note direction of bolt installation. Carefully lower rear axle from vehicle body.
