Rear Axle: Installation

  1. Using transmission jack, install rear axle under vehicle. Install control arm-to-body mounting bolts. Bolts must be installed from the inboard side of control arm on some models. On all models, DO NOT tighten bolts at this time.
  2. Install stabilizer bar or track bar (if equipped). Install brake lines, parking brake cable and coil springs. Ensure coil springs are properly positioned. See INSTALLATION under COIL SPRINGS & INSULATORS  in this article.
  3. If wheel speed sensor was removed from axle, air gap must be adjusted. Using non-ferrous feeler gauge, adjust wheel speed sensor air gap to .028" (.7 mm). Tighten retaining bolt to specification. Connect wheel speed sensor.
  4. On all models, install brake drums, shock absorbers and wheels. Bleed brake system. Place vehicle at curb height. Tighten control arm-to-body mounting bolts to specification.
