Adjustment Procedure

NOTE: Make all adjustment with parking brake set and the drive wheels blocked. Have engine at normal operating temperature, air conditioning OFF (if equipped), and electric cooling fan OFF.
  1. Verify the "Check Engine" (or "Service Engine Soon") light is OFF. Put the Electronic Spark Timing (EST) into bypass mode by disconnecting the timing connector. The timing connector is located:
    • Camaro - Taped to engine harness, RH rear of the engine compartment. See Fig 1
    • Firebird - Taped to engine harness, RH side of firewall. See Fig 2
      NOTE: This is a single wire sealed connector. The leads are Tan with a Black stripe. DO NOT  disconnect the four-wire connector at the distributor.
  2. Connect timing light to #1 spark plug wire and set timing to specification with engine running at idle speed. See Figure See the IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATION  table.
  3. Reconnect timing connector and clear ECM trouble code.
IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATION (1)

Application Degrees BTDC @ RPM
A/T (2) 10° @ Idle
M/T 10° @ Idle
(1) Timing light on #1 spark plug wire.
(2) In DRIVE.
