Drive Belt Routing (Except "H" Body): Description
Many manufactures are converting to single ("serpentine" or "V" ribbed) belt systems to drive components which normally have required multiple "V" belts. The serpentine belt system incorporates a tensioner which makes it possible to rigidly mount belt-driven components which formally required individual adjustment. Manufacturers claim a belt life of 100,000 miles and little, if any, necessary adjustment.
The serpentine belt tensioner controls belt tension over a wide range of belt lengths. The tensioner cannot compensate for extreme belt lengths. Poor tension control or possible tensioner damage can result from excessive length belts.
