Drive/Propeller Shaft: Service and Repair

One type of propeller shaft is used on all vehicles. The type being used is a one-piece shaft with two single cardan type U-joints. Two methods of retention are used at the rear of the propeller shaft. The first method uses a pair of straps retained by bolts, while the second method uses a set of bolted flanges.
1. Raise and properly support vehicle, then mark relationship of propeller shaft to companion flange in order to insure correct alignment during reassembly.
2. Disconnect rear U-joint by removing strap bolts of flange bolts. If U-joint bearing cups are loose, tape them together to avoid dropping and losing needle rollers.
3. Remove propeller shaft by pulling rearward. Support propeller shaft during removal. Do not allow propeller shaft to drop or allow universal joints to bend to an extreme angle.
4. Reverse procedure to install, making sure that alignment marks are properly aligned. Torque strap retaining bolts to 15 ft. lbs. Torque flange bolts to 45 ft. lbs.
