Valve lifters can be lifted from their bores after removing rocker arms and pushrods and intake manifold. Adjustable pliers with protected jaws may be used to remove lifters which are stuck due to carbon or varnish deposits. Figs. 16 and 17 illustrate the two types of valve lifters used.
