Instrument Panel - Electronic: Testing: Tachometer

  1. Disconnect tachometer connector at distributor. Connect mating cable from Instrument Panel Tester (J-33431) to connector just removed. Plug in tester and set to "ON" and "54 MPH". Place ignition switch in "RUN" position.
  2. Tachometer should read 900 RPM for V8 engine or 1350 RPM for V6 engine. If tachometer indicates correctly, check for intermittent problem or bad connections.
  3. If tachometer does not indicate correctly, disconnect instrument panel tester and reconnect distributor. Place ignition switch in "RUN" position, leaving engine off.
  4. Measure voltage at circuit No. 121 (White wire) of instrument panel (connector No. 1, terminal F). See Figure . If voltage is above 10 volts, replace instrument cluster. If voltage is below 10 volts, check circuit No. 121 (White wire) to distributor.
