Tachometer Test

  1. Disconnect C1 connector from ignition system (EST distributor). Connect mating cable from Instrument Panel Tester (J-33431) to connector just removed. Plug in tester and set switches to "ON" and "54 MPH" positions.
  2. With ignition switch in "RUN" position, tachometer display should indicate 1350 RPM on V6 engine equipped models, 1800 RPM on 4-cylinder engine equipped models.
  3. If tachometer reading is correct, problem may be an intermittent open circuit or bad connections. Check White or Black/White wire for an open to ground. If tachometer reading is incorrect, reconnect direct ignition system connector and go to next step.
  4. Measure voltage at instrument panel C1 connector terminal No. 5 with ignition switch in "RUN" position. See Figure . If reading is above .10 volts, replace instrument cluster. If reading is below .10 volts, check White wire from ignition system (EST distributor).
