Instrument Panel - Electronic: Description

The electronic instrument cluster consists of 4 major sub-assemblies: speedometer/tachometer assembly, odometer assembly, Driver Information Center (DIC), and gauge assembly. Instrument cluster includes an audible alarm. Audible alarm signals low oil pressure, high temperature, low or high voltage, low fuel, and DIC module warnings.

The service reminder section of the DIC displays the number of miles remaining before vehicle service is needed. Types of service displayed are oil and filter change, tire rotation, and tune-up. When ignition switch is turned to "RUN", "BULB TEST" or "START" position, each item in display will light up for 1 1/2 seconds. System will display only those items needing attention. When the "RESET" button is depressed, a type of service and number of miles remaining until it is needed will be displayed. DIC is controlled by an electronic processor assembly located to the right of the glove box.

When the DIC processor is replaced, the service reminder must be reset to the nearest 500 mile (or kilometer) increment remaining in the maintenance intervals. Reset mileage may be obtained by calling up intervals stored in the previous module before it is removed.

Gauge display includes bar graph-type fuel, temperature, charging, and oil pressure gauges. All gauges are accompanied by warning lamps.

The speedometer signal is generated by a permanent magnet (PM) generator mounted on the transmission. Subassemblies are not repairable and are serviced by replacement or exchanged.
