M/T - Poor Shiftability or No Shift Condition

Number 86-7-26 Date 6/86
Subject: POOR SHIFTABILITY OR NO SHIFT CONDITION WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION

1986 FIERO WITH 4 SPEED OR 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION

SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY:

Some 1986 Fieros with 4 speed or 5 speed manual transmission may have been built with improperly torqued shift cable or select cable to shift lever nuts.

This condition may allow the cable adjustment to change due to the loose nut or may cause the cable to separate from the lever if the nut is lost. See Illustration.

If a shift comment is received, inspect cable nuts, install new nuts and washers if necessary.. Follow the service procedure for adjusting the shift cables, page 7B-1 in the 1986 Service Manual. Torque the cable nuts to 27 N-m 20 ft.lbs.
