Instrument Panel - Electronic: Testing: Speedometer
- Visually examine transmission sensor PM generator connector to ensure that it is not loose, corroded, broken or otherwise defective. If it is, replace, clean, or tighten connector as required.
- If okay, disconnect speedometer sensor harness at PM generator. Connect speedometer harness to signal generator sensor connector and turn tester on. Verify that speedometer reads 52-56. If it does, replace PM generator and recheck for operative speedometer and odometer modules.
- If it does not read 52-56, remove cluster from vehicle and visually check harness and cluster printed circuit for continuity in wiring. If no continuity exists, replace wiring or printed circuit as required, and recheck for operative speedometer and odometer modules.
- If continuity exists, connect signal generator to speedometer edgeboard connector and turn tester on. If speedometer reads 52-56 and odometer turns, check connection between cluster and wiring harness.
- If speedometer reads 52-56, but odometer does not turn, check for loose wiring connection between odometer motor terminals and circuit board. If connection is loose or broken, replace odometer motor to obtain exchange circuit board assembly as required.
- If connection is not loose or broken, connect signal generator odometer connector to odometer motor lead and turn tester on. If odometer motor works. Obtain exchange circuit board assembly. If odometer motor does not work, replace odometer motor and reconnect motor to circuit board assembly.
- If speedometer does not read 52-56 as outlined in step 4), disassemble cluster and check gauge as outlined in step 8). See Fig 1 .
- Apply approximately 12 volts between terminals 4 and 1 (terminal 4 is negative). Note position of pointer. Keeping voltage applied, apply 12 volts between terminals 2 and 3 (terminal 2 is negative). Pointer should rotate clockwise approximately 45°.
- Remove 12 volts between terminals 1 and 4. Pointer should rotate clockwise an additional 45°. If gauge does not meet any of these tests, replace with a new gauge assembly.
