Fig. 5 Manual transaxle shift cable adjustment. 1985---86 & 1987---88 w/5 Speed Isuzu Transaxle:

1985-88 w/5 Speed Isuzu Transaxle

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Shift transaxle into first gear.
3. Loosen shift cable attaching nuts ``E'' on transaxle levers ``D'' and ``F,'' Fig. 5.
4. Remove console and trim plates to provide access to shifter.
5. With transaxle in first gear, insert alignment pins ``F'' and ``G,'' view ``C,'' Fig. 5.
6. Remove backlash from transaxle by rotating lever ``D'' in direction of arrow while tightening nut ``A'' to 20 ft. lbs. Repeat procedure for nut ``E'' on lever ``F.'' Levers ``D'' and ``F'' must remain stationary while tightening nuts.
7. Ensure reverse inhibit cam is against roller and align if necessary.
8. Remove alignment pins from shifter assembly.
9. Install console trim plate and reconnect battery ground cable.
10. Road test vehicle and check shifter for proper operation. If ``hang-up'' is encountered when shifting in the 1-2 gear range and the shift cables are properly adjusted, it may be necessary to replace the shifter shaft selective washer. Refer to step 10 under ``1984'' for procedure.
