Valve Stem Oil Seals: Removal

  1. Remove valve cover. When removing rocker arm components, keep them in position for reinstallation in original location. Remove spark plugs. If valve or valve seat has not been damaged, valve stem seals can be removed by holding valve against seat using air pressure.
  2. Install Air Line Adapter (J-23590) in spark plug hole. A minimum of 140 psi (9.8 kg/cm2 ) line pressure is required. If air pressure does not hold valve shut, valve is damaged or burnt and cylinder head must be removed for service.
  3. Compress valve spring using Spring Compressor (J-5892). See Fig 1. Remove valve lock retainers, release spring compressor and remove retainer cap, spring, valve stem oil seal, shim and push rod. Discard valve stem oil seal.

NOTE: If oversized valves have been installed, oversized oil seals must be used.
