Valve Guide Servicing

  1. Valve guides are integral with cylinder head. Check valve stem-to-guide clearance. If clearance exceeds service limits, recondition valve guide. To check valve guide wear, insert valve with head positioned .06" (1.5 mm) away from valve seat.
  2. Attach dial gauge to cylinder head. Position gauge indicator against valve stem at right angle and just above guide. Move valve side-to-side and measure guide wear shown on dial gauge.
  3. Use Valve Guide Reamer Set (J-5330-1, 2 or 3) for reconditioning guides. For cleaning guides, use Valve Guide Cleaner (J-8101).
  4. When reconditioning, always use next oversize reamer and oversize valve. Oversize valves are available in .0030" (.089 mm), .015" (.39 mm), and .030" (.076 mm) sizes. If valve face is reground, measure margin width. Minimum valve margin width is .030" (.076 mm).
  5. Check valve seats for proper angle and seat width. Measure valve seat runout. Valve seat must be refaced if guide has been reamed. Valve seat width specification is .049-.059" (1.25-1.50 mm) for intake valves and .063-.075" (1.60-1.90 mm) for exhaust valves.
  6. Maximum valve seat runout is .002" (.05 mm). If necessary, use scraper to lightly chamfer or bevel sharp top inside edge of guide. Valve stem end may be reconditioned by grinding. Do not remove more than .010" (.254 mm) from end of valve stem.
