Thrust Bearing Alignment
- Check crankshaft end play at No. 4 journal with crankshaft bearing caps installed. Push crankshaft to the extreme forward position. Measure end play at front end of No. 4 main bearing.
- Replace No. 4 main thrust bearing if not to specification. Standard crankshaft end play is .002-.008" (.05-.20 mm). Maximum end play is .012" (.30 mm).
- If end play is less than specification, inspect thrust bearing surfaces for scratches, burrs, nicks or dirt. Clean up minor imperfections with oil stone. Recheck end play. Main bearing caps must be tight when checking end play. See Fig 1.
