Hydraulic Valve Lifter Assembly
NOTE:
Before replacing hydraulic lifter for noisy operation, check for worn rocker arms or valve tips. If lifter assembly sticks in bore, use hydraulic lifter puller tool or magnet to remove.
- Hydraulic lifters are serviced as assemblies only. Parts are select-fit and are not interchangeable. Used lifter assemblies must be installed in original locations.
- Using Lifter Remover (J-29834) or magnet, remove lifters. Clean and inspect but do not mix components or positions. If lifter is sticking, disassemble and clean lifter components.
- If lifter check valve is not functional, obstructions may be preventing it from closing when cam lobe is moving lifter or check valve spring may be broken. Clean or replace components as necessary.
- If plunger does not move freely in body of lifter, soak lifter in solvent to free plunger and dissolve deposits if necessary. Plunger should drop to bottom of body easily when assembled dry. Assemble lifter and check unloaded operation by pressing down on cap.NOTE: When performing leak-down test, note that only calibrated test fluid can be used. If old lifter is disassembled and cleaned, fill with test fluid before installing and testing. New lifters contain test fluid. If new lifter is installed, remove sealer coating from inside of new lifter and check leak-down rate.
- Place lifter upright in Leak-Down Tester (J-5790) and check leakdown rate. If not within specifications, replace lifter assembly. Inspect lifter base-to-cam lobe contact area. Surface must have smooth and convex contact face.
- Inspect lifters for flattened or concave bottom surface. If lifter is replaced, inspect related cam lobe for proper lobe lift. If a lobe is worn beyond specification, replace camshaft (and lifters if necessary). Check lifter-to-bore clearance. Before installing lifters, coat bottom of lifter with Molykote.
