Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Disconnect battery negative cable and remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Raise vehicle. Remove exhaust manifold shield. Disconnect exhaust inlet pipe at manifold.
  2. Remove heater hose from intake manifold. Lower vehicle. Remove engine lift bracket. Remove distributor. Disconnect vacuum manifold at alternator bracket. Disconnect remaining vacuum lines to intake manifold and thermostat.
  3. If equipped, remove pulsair pipe assembly. Remove air management pipe at exhaust check valve. Disconnect accelerator linkage at TBI and remove linkage bracket. Disconnect necessary wiring. Remove upper radiator hose at thermostat housing. Remove dipstick tube and hot water bracket.
  4. Remove idler pulley. Remove power steering drive belt (if equipped) and disconnect pump. Remove power steering adjusting bracket. Disconnect fuel line at TBI. Remove alternator with wiring. Remove alternator brace and upper bracket. Remove valve cover.
  5. Remove rocker arms and push rods. Index mark these parts for reassembly reference. Remove cylinder head bolts. Remove cylinder head, TBI assembly, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
NOTE: If cylinder head is to be serviced, remove carbon deposits from combustion chamber with scraper and wire brush before removing valves. When disassembling, index mark all valve components for reassembly reference.
