AMERICAN Motors & Ford Motor Co.

Check compressor oil level only if any portion el refrigerant system is being replaced, or if system was discharged due to a leak. Check oil level as follows:

  1. After system has been charged, operate for approximately 10 minutes, or until pressures hove stabilized (with ambient temperature of 60°F or higher).
  2. Stop engine. On Ford Motor Co. models, discharge entire system. On American Motors models, oil may be checked without discharging system by isolating compressor as described in "ISOLATING COMPRESSOR" procedure in this article.
  3. Loosen oil check plug slowly to relieve any internal compressor pressure. When pressure is relieved, remove plug, insert appropriate end of suitable dipstick into compressor until it bottoms. If necessary, rotate crankshaft slightly by hand so dipstick will clear crankshaft. Level on dipstick should be within specifications, if necessary, add clean refrigeration oil. Reinstall check plug, ensuring that plug "O" ring is not twisted.
NOTE: When inserting dipstick into horizontally mounted compressors, angle dipstick so if bottoms on lower wall of crankcase, rather than on boss provided for additional oil check plug.
