Reed Valve & Head Gasket: Installation
- Install dowel pins in rear of housing. Install reed valve, ensuring that all through bolt holes are clear (to avoid installing backwards). Install rear valve plate, gasket, and oiled "O" ring.
- Install rear cover carefully. Position compressor on bench so crankshaft is pointing up and assembly is sitting on rear cover. Install dowel pins and reed valve.
- Install valve plate and gasket. Clean crankshaft and lubricate with refrigerant oil, then install seal. Lubricate cavity in front cover and install shaft seal seat and "O" ring, pressing in place with a socket that contacts outer edge of seat.
- Lubricate a new front cover "O" ring with refrigerant oil and position in groove of front cover. Install front cover, ensuring holes are aligned with dowel pins. Using new brass washers, install 6 through bolts finger tight.
- Tighten bolts evenly to 260 INCH lbs. (Chrysler) or 18-19 ft. lbs. (Ford). Install shaft key and felt seal (and retainer on Chrysler).
- Ensure coil alignment pin is firmly seated in front cover. Install coil, aligning hole with pin in cover. Install snap ring bevel side out and reconnect wires.
- Install pulley. If necessary, place a block of wood against pulley and tap lightly until pulley is seated. Install snap ring with bevel side out.NOTE: Do nor mar frictional surface during installation, Straighten grease slinger if distorted by tapping.
- Install shims and clutch front plate. Measure between plate and pulley face and install shims to obtain a 0.020 - 0.035" air gap. Install lock washer and nut, torquing to 12 ft. lbs. Recheck air gap and install compressor in vehicle.
