Reed Valve & Head Gasket: Removal
- Discharge A/C system and remove compressor. Remove clutch hub retaining nut and use puller to remove clutch front plate. Remove pulley snap ring and slide pulley off. Disconnect field coil ground wire, remove field coil snap ring, and remove coil.
- Clean outside of compressor to avoid getting dirt into openings. Remove shaft key from crankshaft. Remove 6 through bolts. Tap front cover lightly with plastic hammer and remove cover. If reed valve assembly remains in front cover, lift off inlet reed valve and remove valve plate with valve plate remover tool. Remove gasket.
- Slide shaft seal off, or remove from front cover. Remove dowel pins from cover and place front head on a flat surface with neck facing up. Remove felt seal and retainer (Chrysler only) and drive seal seat out of cover with drift.
- Remove rear cover by tapping with plastic hammer. Remove and discard "O" ring, then remove dowel pins, valve plate, reed valve and gasket.
