Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Clockspring is located at top of steering column, behind steering wheel. Clockspring cannot be repaired and MUST be replaced if faulty or if air bag module has deployed.
  2. Remove steering wheel and driver-side air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL  . Remove upper steering column cover. It may be necessary to loosen lower part of instrument cluster hood to remove steering column cover. Remove air bag module and steering wheel. See AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL  .
  3. Remove multifunction switch. Disconnect 2-pin and 4-pin connectors at base of clockspring. See Figure . Release clockspring latch, and remove clockspring from steering shaft.
