Air Bag Module & Steering Wheel: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position. Lock steering wheel in place by removing ignition key.
  2. Remove cruise control switches (if equipped) and steering column covers (if necessary). Remove air bag module retaining bolts/nuts from rear of steering wheel. Lift air bag module, and disconnect its connector by spreading apart latching arms and prying up on connector. Place air bag module on a clean, level surface with pad facing upward.
  3. Remove steering wheel retaining nut. Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Note how wires are routed through steering wheel. While removing steering wheel, ensure module, horn, and cruise control wires (if equipped) are fed gently through holes in steering wheel. DO NOT turn clockspring.
