Air Bag Restraint Systems - Except Coupe: Description
All models are equipped with a driver's and front passenger's Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). SRS is designed to supplement front seat belts. By inflating air bags, SRS helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury during a front-end collision. Driver's air bag is stored in a module within steering wheel pad. Passenger's air bag is stored above glove box, beneath instrument panel fascia on right side of vehicle.
Air bags are designed to inflate and deflate within 1/10th of a second once impact sensor(s) close. This creates a cushion of air between driver and steering wheel or passenger and instrument panel.
SRS consists of SRS/AIR BAG warning light, clockspring, air bag modules and Air Bag Control Module (AMC) containing an impact sensor. See Fig 1 .
The ACM monitors system and stores fault codes. The ACM provides information to SRS/AIR BAG warning light and diagnostic connector. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored when SRS/AIR BAG warning light is activated for more than 12 seconds.
