Bell Housing: Disassembly

  1. Remove drain plug and drain fluid. See Figure . Remove flex plate bolts. See Figure . Remove flex plate and backing plate. See Figure . Remove drive flange nut. Use a deep 1 1/4" socket. See Figure . Remove drive flange. See Figure . Remove front bearing seal. See Figure . Remove rear seal. See Figure .
  2. Install Special Tool # C-293-1 base into shop press. See Figure . Position bell housing into shop press. See Figure . While holding onto bottom of shaft, press out shaft from bell housing.
    NOTE: Replace crush sleeve whenever disassembling bell housing.
  3. Remove outer bearing from housing. Remove crush sleeve from shaft. Install Special Tool # P-334 splitter onto shaft. Install shaft into shop press. Remove bearing from shaft. Remove outer bearing cup from housing using Special Tool # D-4345 remover, C-4171 driver, and C-4171-2 extension. See Figure . Remove inner bearing cup from housing using Special Tool # D-158 remover, C-4171 driver, and C-4171-2 extension. See Figure . #D-146.
