Propeller Shaft Imbalance

NOTE: Removing and re-indexing propeller shaft 120° may eliminate some vibrations.

If propeller shaft imbalance is suspected, it can be verified with following procedure: Clean all foreign material from propeller shaft and coupler flanges (mud, undercoating, etc.). Inspect propeller shaft for missing balance weights, broken welds, and bent areas. If propeller shaft is found with any of these conditions, shaft and couplers must be replaced as an assembly. Ensure coupling flanges are not worn, are properly installed, and correctly aligned with shaft. Check coupling flange bolts torque. Check propeller shaft angle.

  1. Start engine and check for vibration. Accelerate through all RPM ranges. If there is a vibration at a certain RPM, remove propeller shaft and reindex 120°. Repeat vibration test.
  2. If there is no change in amount of vibration, replace propeller shaft and couplers as an assembly. If vibration occurs at a certain vehicle speed, propeller shaft is not cause.
