Removal & Installation: Knuckle: Installation

  1. Install knuckle on lower ball joint. Install a NEW nut and washer on stud of lower ball joint.
  2. NOTE: When installing lateral and trailing links, DO NOT fully tighten mounting bolts until requested. Full weight of vehicle must be on rear suspension before tightening lateral and trailing link mounting bolts. Tightening these bolts with suspension at any other position will affect curb height of vehicle and will lead to premature failure of lateral link bushings.
  3. Install trailing link on knuckle. Install nut and bolt attaching trailing link to isolator bushing in knuckle. See Fig 4 . DO NOT tighten bolt at this time. Install lateral links on knuckle. See Fig 3 . DO NOT tighten attaching bolts at this time.
  4. NOTE: When tightening ball joint stud to knuckle attaching nut using Adapter (C-3705 or 8810), torque reading on torque wrench will be lower then specified torque for attaching nut. To obtain specified torque on attaching nut, the torque reading on torque wrench will be 63 ft. lbs. (85 N.m). See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Tighten lower control arm ball joint to knuckle attaching nut using Adapter (C-3705 or 8810). See Figure . Tighten lower ball joint to knuckle attaching nut to specification, using Adapter. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install 3 hub/bearing attaching bolts into knuckle. Install caliper adapter on knuckle using 3 hub/bearing bolts to hold it in place.
  6. Install hub/bearing on stub shaft to outer C/V joint. Align hub/bearing with its 3 mounting bolts pulling and hand start bolts into flange of hub/bearing. Equally tighten 3 mounting bolts pulling hub/bearing onto stub shaft and into knuckle. Continue to tighten 3 mounting bolts equally until caliper adapter and hub/bearing are squarely seated on knuckle. Tighten 3 mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    NOTE: Snug retaining nut at this time but DO NOT attempt to tighten it to required torque specification.
  7. Install stub axle to hub/bearing retaining nut. See Figure . Install park brake cable on park brake shoe actuator, located on rear of caliper adapter. See Fig 1 . Install brake rotor on hub/bearing. Install disc brake caliper on caliper adapter, reversing removal procedure, seeFigure . Install disc brake caliper adapter mounting bolts. See Figure . Tighten mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. NOTE: The next several steps are necessary to provide access to properly tighten and torque lateral link mounting bolts with links in correct position.
  9. Remove tire and wheel assembly from opposite side of vehicle. To prevent damage to caps by jackstands, remove caps from both lower ball joints.
  10. Position jack stands so they are located between stabilizer bar attaching links and lower ball joints on lower control arms. See Figure . Lower vehicle so that both rear lower control arms are supported by jack stands and total weight of vehicle is supported by lower control arms. Tighten bolt attaching trailing link to isolator bushing in knuckle to 120 ft. lbs. (163 N.m).
  11. Raise vehicle and remove jack stands from under control arms. Install both tire and wheel assemblies. Tighten wheel mounting nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat tightening sequence to full specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Lower vehicle. Apply park brake and have a technician help apply vehicle brake system to keep vehicle from moving. Tighten stub shaft to hub/bearing retaining nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . See Figure . Install center cap on wheel. Position vehicle on an alignment rack. Correctly measure vehicles curb height. Check and adjust alignment. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES-PROWLER article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
