Removal & Installation: Hub/Bearing: Removal

  1. Remove center cap from wheel. Center cap is removed by inserting a trim stick into notch on center cap and prying it off wheel. See Figure . With weight of vehicle supported by tires and parking brake applied, loosen, but do remove, stub shaft to hub bearing nut. See Figure .
  2. Raise vehicle on jackstand or centered on a frame contact type hoist. Remove tire and wheel assembly. Remove 2 bolts mounting rear disc brake caliper to caliper adapter. See Figure . Remove disc brake caliper from caliper adapter. Caliper is removed by first rotating free end of caliper away from caliper adapt. Then with free end of caliper rotated away from adapter, lift caliper off machined abutment on adapter.
  3. Support disc brake caliper by hanging it from shock absorber bracket on frame using wire or tie strap. See Figure . DO NOT let flex hose support weight of brake caliper, damage to flex hose can occur. Remove brake rotor from hub/bearing. See Figure . Remove stub shaft to hub/bearing retaining nut. See Figure . Install Puller (ST 6790), on flange of hub/bearing. See Figure . Place bolt of puller in center of stub shaft.
  4. CAUTION: When pressing stub shaft out of hub/bearing, do not exceed distance of one inch from rear surface of knuckle. See Figure . If stub shaft is pressed back further driveshaft joints can be damaged.
  5. The outer C/V joint needs to be pressed away from knuckle for required socket clearance when removing hub/bearing mounting bolts. See Figure . Using Puller (ST 6790), partially press stub axle out of hub/bearing. Stub shaft is to be pressed out of hub bearing until rib on C/V joint housing is one inch back from rear surface of knuckle.
  6. NOTE: DO NOT remove 3 mounting bolts after they are threaded out of hub bearing. Mounting bolts will hold caliper adapter in position on knuckle when hub bearing is removed.
  7. Unthread 3 bolts mounting hub/bearing and caliper adapter to knuckle, out of hub/bearing mounting flange. See Figure .
  8. NOTE: DO NOT remove 3 mounting bolts after they are threaded out of hub/bearing. The mounting bolts will hold caliper adapter in position on knuckle when hub/bearing is removed.
  9. Unthread 3 bolts mounting hub/bearing and caliper adapter to knuckle, out of hub/bearing mounting flange.
  10. NOTE: The outer C/V joint stub axle spline to hub bearing spline are an interference fit. They cannot be separated by hand. Puller (ST 6790), must be used to separate hub bearing from outer C/V joint stub axle.
  11. Using Puller (ST 6790), continue pulling hub/bearing off stub shaft of outer C/V joint until 2 pieces separate. See Figure . Then remove hub/bearing from outer C/V joint and caliper adapter.
