Shock Absorber
This vehicle uses rear shock absorbers which have coil springs for rear suspension mounted on them. See Fig 1 . This type of shock absorber called a coil-over shock absorber. The shock absorbers used this vehicle are supplied by Dynamic Suspensions. The top of each shock absorber is mounted to the frame of the vehicle using a rubber isolator bushing pressed into the upper mounting eye of the shock absorber. The bottom of the shock is mounted to the lower control arm using the clevis on the bottom of the shock absorber. The attachment of the clevis to the rear lower control arm is done using a mounting bracket bolted to the lower control arm. This mounting bracket contains the isolator bushing for the clevis. The clevis is also used as the lower seat for the coil spring.
The coil springs used on this vehicle have a special powder coating applied to them. the coating protects the surface of the spring from corrosion and other damage. Each end of the coil spring is unique. See Fig 2 . One end is flat and the other is round. The round end of the coil must be installed on the lower spring seat of the shock clevis bracket while the flat end of the coil is installed against the upper spring seat.
The shock assembly provides the control for both the jounce and rebound control of the vehicle. This control is achieved by the shock absorber being hydraulically calibrated for its specific use on the front suspension of this vehicle. The shock absorber is also used to control the total jounce and rebound travel of the suspension system. The coil spring supports the vehicle's weight, controls ride quality and maintains ride height.
