Description & Operation: Hub/Bearing
The wheel bearing used on the rear of this vehicle is a unit type combined hub and bearing assembly. See Fig 1 . This hub/bearing combines the wheel mounting hub (flange) and the wheel bearing into a one piece unit. The hub/bearing is mounted to the center of the rear knuckle and is retained by three mounting bolts accessible from the back of the knuckle. The center of the hub/bearing is splined to accept the halfshaft outer C/V joint. The bearing used on the hub and bearing unit is not serviceable. If it is determined that the bearing is defective, replacement of the entire assembly is required.
The hub flange has five wheel mounting studs. They are the only replaceable components of the hub/bearing. The hub/bearing has internal bearings that allow the hub to rotate with the tire and wheel. The five wheel mounting studs, mount the tire, wheel, and brake rotor to the vehicle. The splined center of the hub/bearing allows the drivetrain halfshaft to use the hub and bearing as a driving hub.
