- Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist.
NOTE:
When removing center cap from wheel do not use a sharp or hard Tool . Use of such a Tool can mare finish on wheel and damage center cap.
- Remove center cap from wheel. Center cap is removed by inserting a trim stick into notch on center cap and prying it off wheel. Remove front wheel and tire. Remove 2 bolts attaching disc brake caliper to caliper adapter. Remove disc brake caliper from caliper adapter. Caliper is removed by first rotating free end of caliper away from caliper adapter. Then with free end of caliper rotated away from adapter, lift caliper off machined abutment on adapter. See Figure

NOTE:
The upper control arm on this vehicle has a clearcoat finish applied to it. When hanging disc brake caliper from control arm do not use wire or any similar material that would damage clearcoat finish. A plastic tie strap is a suitable method of supporting disc brake caliper. See Figure
.
- Support disc brake caliper firmly by hanging it from upper control arm using a tie strap. See Figure
. DO NOT let flex hose support weight of brake caliper, damage to flex hose can occur. Remove brake rotor from hub/bearing. Remove 4 bolts mounting hub/bearing and caliper adapter to steering knuckle. See Figure
. Remove hub/bearing and caliper adapter from steering knuckle.
- Remove 3 nuts mounting fender bracket to steering knuckle. Remove fender from steering knuckle. Remove nut and washer attaching outer tie rod end to steering knuckle. See Figure
. Nut is to be removed using following procedure. Hold tie rod end stud from rotating with a 11/32 socket while loosening and removing nut with a wrench. See Figure
. Remove outer tie rod from steering knuckle using Puller, Special Tool C-3894-A.
NOTE:
The lower ball joint to steering knuckle attaching nut must not be reused. Discard attaching nut after it is removed.
NOTE:
Nut (Special Tool 6998-2) used to remove upper and lower ball joint stud from steering knuckle, is part of Remover (Special Tool 6998).
- Remove nut and washer from stud of upper ball joint. See Figure
.
NOTE:
The lower ball joint to steering knuckle attaching nut is not to be reused. Discard attaching nut when it is removed.
- Install Nut (Special Tool 6998-2) on stud of upper ball joint. See Figure
. Nut must be installed so it is fully seated against steering knuckle but does not need to be excessively tightened. Remove nut from stud of lower ball joint. Install Remover (Special Tool 6998), between Special Tool 6998-2 and lower ball joint stud.
CAUTION:
DO NOT strike steering knuckle or apply heat to steering knuckle when separating the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
- Using a wrench, keep section of special Tool 6998 that is against Special Tool 6998-2 from rotating. Using another wrench, tighten threaded end of Remover against stud of lower ball joint. This will press lower ball joint stud out of steering knuckle. After released from knuckle, do not completely remove ball joint stud from knuckle.
- Remove the Remover, Special Tool 6998, from the steering knuckle. Remove the Nut, Special Tool 6988-2. See Figure
. from the upper ball joint stud.
NOTE:
Nut, Special Tool 6998-1, is part of Remover, special Tool 6998, which is used to remove the upper and lower ball joint stub from the steering knuckle.
- Install nut, Special Tool 6998-1, on the lower ball joint stud, whichis still lossely in knuckle lower ball joint hole, until nut is on far enough to contact knuckle and keep from rotating. See Figure
. Tighten threaded end of Remover, (Special Tool 6988), against stud of the upper ball joint. See Figure
. This will press lower ball joint stud out of steering knuckle.
- Remove the Remover (Special Tool 6988), from steering knuckle. Remove Nut (Special Tool 6988-1) from lower ball joint stub. See Figure
. Remove steering knuckle from control arms.
