System Operation Check

  1. Turn ignition on. If AIR BAG indicator comes on for approximately 6-8 seconds then goes out, air bag system is functioning properly and no fault codes exist.
  2. If a fault code is detected in air bag system during system check, AIR BAG indicator will fail to light, stay on continuously or flash rapidly.
  3. On all models except Aspire and Villager, AIR BAG indicator may not start flashing for approximately 16-30 seconds (45 seconds on Contour, Escort, Mystique, Probe, and Tracer) after ignition switch has been turned to RUN position. It takes approximately 16-45 seconds for the diagnostic monitor to completely test air bag system.
  4. If AIR BAG indicator is inoperative and/or system fault exists, an audible tone of 5 sets of 5 beeps will be heard. If this occurs, air bag system service is required.
