Rear Caliper Adapter: Removal
NOTE:
When removing center cap from wheel do not use a sharp or hard tool. Use of such a tool can damage finish on wheel and damage center cap.
- Remove center cap from wheel. Center cap is removed by inserting a trim stick into notch on center cap and prying it off wheel. See Figure . With weight of vehicle supported by tires and parking brake applied, loosen but do not remove stub shaft to hub bearing nut. See Fig 1 .
- Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist. Remove wheel and tire. Remove 2 bolts, mounting rear disc brake caliper to caliper adapter. See Figure . Remove disc brake caliper from caliper adapter. Caliper is removed by first rotating free end of caliper away from caliper adapter. See Figure . Then with free end of caliper rotated away from adapter, lift caliper off caliper adapter.
- Support disc brake caliper by hanging it from shock absorber bracket on frame, using wire or a tie strap. See Figure
. DO NOT let flex hose support weight of brake caliper, damage to flex hose can occur.NOTE: If rotor retainers are on wheel mounting studs they must be remove before attempting to remove rotor. They do not need to be installed when rotor is installed back on hub bearing.
- Remove rotor from hub/bearing. Remove stub shaft to hub/bearing retaining nut. See Fig 2
. Install Puller (Special Tool 6790) on flange of hub/bearing. See Fig 3
. Place puller bolt in center of stub shaft.NOTE: The outer C/V joint needs to be pressed away from knuckle for required socket clearance when removing hub/bearing mounting bolts. See Fig 4 .CAUTION: When pressing stub shaft out of hub/bearing, do not exceed distance of one inch from rear surface of knuckle. If stub shaft is pressed back further driveshaft joints can be damaged.
- Using Puller, Special Tool 6790, partially press stub axle out of hub/bearing. Press stub axle out of hub bearing until rib on housing of outer C/V joint is one inch back from rear surface of knuckle. Remove 3 bolts mounting hub/bearing and caliper adapter to knuckle. See Fig 4
.NOTE: The outer C/V joint stub axle spline to hub bearing spline are an interference fit. They can not be separated by hand. Puller (Special Tool 6790), must be used to separate hub bearing from outer C/V joint stub axle.
- Using Puller (Special Tool 6790) continue pressing hub/bearing off stub shaft of outer C/V joint until 2 pieces separate. See Fig 3 . Then remove hub/bearing from outer C/V joint and knuckle. Remove park brake cable from park brake shoe actuator. The park brake shoe actuator is located at rear of caliper adapter. See Fig 5 .
- Remove park brake cable from caliper adapter. Park brake cable is removed from caliper adapter by pushing a 1/2 inch box wrench over end of park brake cable retainer. See Figure . This will collapse retaining fingers on park brake cable retainer and push park brake cable out of caliper adapter. Remove caliper adapter and park brake shoes as an assembly from knuckle.
