Rear Brake Pads: Installation
NOTE:
Step 1) below is only required when installing a caliper after new brake shoes have been installed.
- Completely retract piston into bore of caliper. Lubricate both abutments on caliper adapter with a liberal amount of Mopar brake grease or an equivalent.CAUTION: The rear disc brake rotors used on this vehicle are made from aluminum silica carbide alloy. For this reason, only Mopar original equipment manufacturer (OEM) replacement brake shoes using OEM friction material are to be used when brake shoe replacement is required. If brake shoes using friction material other then OEM friction material are used with aluminum rotors, severe scoring of rotor braking surfaces will occur. If braking surfaces of rotor become scored replacement of rotor will be required. The rear disc brake rotor used on this vehicle can not be machined
- If equipped, remove protective paper from noise suppression gasket on inner and outer brake shoes. Install inboard brake shoe into caliper piston by firmly pressing it into piston. See Figure
. Be sure inboard brake shoe is positioned squarely against face of caliper piston. Slide outboard brake shoe onto caliper. See Figure
.CAUTION: Use care when installing caliper onto caliper adapter so seals on caliper guide pin bushings do not get damaged.
- Install disc brake caliper on caliper adapter, reversing removal procedure. See Figure
.CAUTION: When installing caliper guide pin bolts be careful not to cross thread bolts into caliper adapter.
- Install caliper guide pin bolts. See Figure
. Tighten guide pin bolts to 27 N.m (20 ft. lbs.). Install wheels and tires. Tighten wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half of specified torque. Then repeat tightening sequence to full specified torque of 135 N.m (100 ft. lbs.).NOTE: Before moving vehicle, pump brake pedal several times to insure vehicle has a firm brake pedal.
- Install center cap on wheel. Remove jackstands or lower hoist. Road test vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on brakes and to seat brake pads.
