Front Brake Pads: Removal
WARNING:
Although factory installed brake linings used on this vehicle are made from asbestos free materials, some aftermarket brake linings may contain asbestos. This should be taken into account when servicing a vehicle's brake system, when aftermarket brake linings may have been installed on the vehicle. Always wear a respirator when cleaning brake components as asbestos can cause serious bodily harm such as asbestos and or cancer. Never clean brake components by using compressed air, use only a vacuum cleaner specifically designed for the removal of brake dust. If a vacuum cleaner is not available, clean brake parts using only water-dampened shop towels. DO NOT create brake lining dust by sanding brake linings when servicing a vehicle. Dispose of all dust and dirt suspected of containing asbestos fibers using only sealed airtight bags or containers. Follow all recommended safety practices prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for handling and disposal of products containing asbestos.
CAUTION:
During service procedures, grease or any other foreign material must be kept off brake shoe assemblies, and braking surfaces of brake drum and external surfaces of hub/bearing assembly.
- Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a hoist. Remove center cap from wheel. Center cap is removed by inserting a trim stick into notch on center cap and prying it off wheel. See Figure
.NOTE: When removing center cap from wheel DO NOT use a sharp or hard tool. Use of such a tool can mare finish on wheel and damage center cap.
- Remove wheels and tires. Remove 2 bolts attaching disc brake caliper to caliper adapter. See Figure
. Remove disc brake caliper from caliper adapter by first rotating free end of caliper away from caliper adapter. Then slide opposite end of caliper out from under machined abutment on caliper adapter. See Figure
.NOTE: The upper control arm on this vehicle has a clearcoat finish applied to it. When hanging disc brake caliper from control arm do not use wire or any similar material that would damage clearcoat finish. A plastic tie strap as shown in is a suitable method of supporting disc brake caliper. See Fig 1 .
- Support disc brake caliper firmly by hanging it from upper control arm using a plastic tie strap. This is required to prevent weight of caliper from being supported by brake flex hose. Supporting weight of caliper by flex hose can damage flex hose. See Fig 1 .
- Remove outboard brake shoe from caliper, by prying retaining clip over raised area on caliper. See Fig 2 . Then slide brake shoe down and off caliper. Pull inboard brake shoe out of caliper piston until retaining clip on brake shoe is free from cavity in piston. See Fig 3 .
