Removal & Installation

When removing a passenger airbag module.

  1. Disconnect and isolate battery negative cable. Remove cowl trim cover. Remove windshield washer reservoir. Remove resister block for heater blower motor and disconnect wire connector.
  2. Open both vehicle front doors. Remove both left and right endcaps by pulling outboard. See Figure. Remove floor center console. Remove shifter handle. Remove PRNDL assembly. Remove 5 mounting screws in console. Remove console.
  3. Disconnect Airbag Control Module (ACM) wire connector. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755), gently remove instrument panel top cover. Using a trim stick, remove center bezel. Remove 2 screws attaching HVAC control, and turn control sideways place it in opening. See Figure.
  4. Remove tilt steering column lever. Remove tachometer. Remove steering column opening cover. Removal and Installation procedures. See Figure. Remove both upper and lower shrouds from steering column. See Figure. Remove 3 toe plate nuts.
  5. Remove two steering column attaching nuts from lower instrument panel. Remove two screws to shift interlock cable from steering column. Disconnect column wiring. Remove steering column pinch bolt and pull steering column rearward off intermediate shaft.
    CAUTION: Be careful not to let the steering wheel turn once removed. Clockspring damage could result.
  6. Remove instrument panel center support nuts on right and left side of floor tunnel. See Figure. Disconnect rear view mirror wire connector located just to right of headlamp switch.
  7. Disconnect left side wiring for brake switch, BCM connectors (3), body harness connectors (3) and door harness connector.
  8. Remove right upper hood side panel to access right door wiring connector. Disconnect right side wiring for door harness connector, body harness connectors (2), and CD changer DIN cable.
  9. Disconnect ground strap behind defogger duct. Disconnect HVAC wiring connectors. Disconnect windshield antenna wire from antenna amplifier. Remove instrument panel side mounting screws from each side in end cover openings.
  10. Remove instrument panel upper 4 mounting screws. See Figure. Remove 2 screws from top of instrument panel to steering column brake support bracket. Start pulling instrument panel rearward to clear bulkhead. Lift up instrument panel and remove. To install, reverse removal procedures.
