Front Brake Caliper & Pads: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 1991 Plymouth Sundance, 1991 Plymouth Acclaim, 1991 Dodge Spirit, 1991 Dodge Shadow, and 1991 Dodge Dynasty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Generously lubricate both adapter ways with Mopar multipurpose lubricant (or equivalent). Remove protective paper from noise suppression gasket on both inner and outer brake shoe assemblies.
  2. Install new inboard shoe assembly on adapter; ensure grease from adapter way does not get on brake lining material. Install disc on hub. Slide outboard brake shoe on adapter. Carefully lower caliper over disc and brake shoe assemblies.
  3. Install caliper guide pins and tighten to 25-35 ft. lbs. (34-37 N.m).
    CAUTION: Extreme caution should be taken not to cross thread the caliper guide pin bolts.
  4. Install wheel and tire assemblies. Tighten wheel nuts in crisscross sequence to half torque, then repeat tightening sequence to full torque. See the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  5. Lower vehicle and operate brake pedal to ensure a firm feel. Road test vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on brakes and to seat brake shoe linings.


  1. Inboard shoes are common. Outboard shoes are marked with an "L" or "R", indicating installation side on vehicle. Generously lubricate both adapter ways with Mopar multipurpose lubricant (or equivalent).
  2. Install new inboard shoe assembly in caliper; ensure retainer enters into bore of piston. Remove protective paper from noise suppression gasket, and position the correct marked outboard shoe hold-down spring into caliper.
  3. Carefully lower caliper over disc and guide hold-down spring under machined abutment on knuckle assembly. Install attaching bolts and tighten to 18-25 ft. lbs. (23-34 N.m).
    CAUTION: Extreme caution should be taken not to cross thread the caliper bolts.
  4. Install wheel and tire assemblies. Tighten wheel nuts in crisscross sequence to half torque, then repeat tightening sequence to full torque. See the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  5. Lower vehicle and operate brake pedal to ensure a firm feel. Road test vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on brakes and to seat brake shoe linings.
