Removal (AWD)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 1991 Plymouth Sundance, 1991 Plymouth Acclaim, 1991 Dodge Spirit, 1991 Dodge Shadow, and 1991 Dodge Dynasty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. On vehicles with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), carefully remove the rear speed sensor and "O" ring, ensuring that the speed sensor pole piece does not contact any other parts. On all models, remove brake calipers and rotors. Refer to REAR BRAKE CALIPER & PADS  and REAR BRAKE ROTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Remove 3 drive axle-to-companion flange nuts and move drive axle aside. Prevent axle shaft from rotating. Remove and discard self-locking companion flange nut from end of axle shaft. Remove washer and companion flange.
  3. Remove axle shaft using slide hammer. To remove outer bearing and dust cover, remove ABS sensor ring from axle shaft by supporting outboard side of ABS sensor ring and pressing end of axle shaft with hydraulic press.
  4. To remove dust covers and outer bearing from axle shaft, use same procedure as in step 3). To remove inner bearing and oil seal from trailing arm, drive out components from outboard side of vehicle using Bearing Remover/Installer Bar (C-4171).
