AA Body

  1. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER R & I  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Use voltmeter to check for battery voltage at cavity "A" of instrument cluster Black 11-pin connector. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Check for ignition/battery voltage at cavity "C" of instrument cluster connector. If battery voltage is not present in both locations, repair wiring as necessary.
  2. If battery voltage is present, use ohmmeter to check cavity "H" of instrument cluster connector for continuity to ground. If continuity is not present, repair wiring as necessary. See Fig 1 . If continuity exists, check for tachometer signal by connecting an AC digital volt-meter to ground and to cavity "B" of instrument cluster connector.
  3. Voltage reading should be a minimum of one volt with engine running. If voltage is correct, proceed to step 5). If voltage is less than one volt, check wire continuity between cavity "B" of instrument cluster connector and pin No. 43 of engine controller connector. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .
NOTE: Engine controller (SBEC) is located in engine compartment near the battery and contains a 60-pin connector. See Fig 2 .
  4. If wire continuity is not present, repair wiring as necessary. Ensure engine controller (SBEC) and its connector do not have damaged pins or poor connections. If wire continuity exists between cavity "B" and pin No. 43 of engine controller connector, replace engine controller (SBEC) and retest.
  5. If all tests performed are good and tachometer is still inoperative, replace tachometer drive module. Tachometer drive module is attached to printed circuit board on rear of instrument cluster. If tachometer still remains inoperable, replace tachometer assembly.
