Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

1. Remove timing belt if camshaft sprocket cannot be supported. See TIMING BELT .
2. Remove valve cover and oil baffle (if equipped). If camshaft sprocket is to be removed, use Sprocket Holder (C-4687) with Adapter (C-4687-1) to hold camshaft sprocket and remove sprocket bolt. See Figure. Remove camshaft sprocket.
3. Using Intermediate Shaft & Camshaft Seal Remover (C-4679), remove camshaft seal. See Figure. Place reference mark on rocker arm for reassembly reference.
4. Note that arrow on bearing cap is toward camshaft sprocket and caps are numbered for location. Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts several turns in proper sequence. See Fig 1. Using soft-faced mallet, tap rear of camshaft to loosen bearing caps. Remove bolts, bearing caps and camshaft.

CAUTION: Camshaft bearing cap bolts must be removed in sequence. This prevents camshaft from binding in cylinder head and/or damage to camshaft and/or bearing thrust surfaces may result.
